King George VI was born in 1985 and he became King unexpectedly following the abdication of his brother,
King Edward VIII, in December 1936 and reigned until his death in 1952.
The new design was introduced in 1937 and the reverse became one of the most loved and controversial of Canada’s coinage designs.
The reverse features a schooner under sail. It was not until March 2002 that it was officially recognized as the “Bluenose”
The initial obverse contained the legend “ET IND: IMP” to indicate that the King was the Emperor of India.
