The Liberty Seated design on the obverse was used on the Half Dime from 1837 – 1873. There were four varieties during that time. The 1853 had both varieties two and three. This particular coin is variety three which has arrows on each side of the date. They were put there to denote the reduction of the weight from 1.34 grams to 1.24 grams. The mintage was 13,210,000, composition .900 silver, .100 copper.
